FERPA

FAMILY EDUCATIONAL RIGHTS AND PRIVACY ACT (FERPA)

Known by its acronym, FERPA, this important legislation guarantees students certain rights regarding their education records (records that include, but are not limited to, grades, financial records, and other personal information). FERPA applies to all students attending SVA, regardless of age. SVA's full FERPA disclosure, as well as additional FERPA resources, can be viewed at sva.edu/ferpa.

CHOSEN OR PREFERRED NAMES

SVA recognizes that many members of our community use names other than their legal names to identify themselves. Therefore, any student, staff, or faculty member may declare a chosen or preferred name to be used where possible across campus.

Use of the chosen or preferred name will be reflected wherever possible, such as on the following SVA records:

  • Grade rosters

  • Attendance rosters

  • SVA ID cards

  • Mid-term evaluations

  • SVA email display name*

A legal name may be required for other records, including student transcripts, financial aid documents and student invoices, payroll records, and tax documentation. Note that official correspondence from the College may use the legal name.

Students, staff, and faculty members may complete a Chosen/Preferred Name Declaration Form with the Registrar. Changes to a chosen or preferred name will be made in the College’s main database system within 24 hours, but it may take additional time for the name to be reflected in other systems across campus. A preferred name may be changed only once per academic year.

Requests to change a legal name must be accompanied by appropriate documentation (such as a court order, marriage license, federal/state ID, etc.). Students may submit a Legal Name Change Form with the Registrar. Faculty and staff members may contact Human Resources to change their legal name.

* To change your SVA email display name, log in to your SVA email account and follow these instructions.
