SVA CONTINUING EDUCATION FACULTY UPDATES

What have SVACE faculty members been up to? We have exciting updates from faculty members Shannon Broder, Devi Dumbadze, and Shelley Haven!

Shannon Broder was featured at House Beautiful for her Etsy storefront, Broderpress. Through Etsy, she sells custom and standard pillows and totes, notably using silkscreen printing to turn a user's pet photo into a shaped pillow. Could a pillow become man’s best friend? Shannon tells House Beautiful, "Everyone likes an animal. You know, whether it's a giraffe or an elephant or a rhino. It's that connection that people have when they look at it, it brings them joy. And that's what I'm looking to give people," she says.” Shannon, an SVA alum, will teach Silkscreen on Thursdays this fall at SVACE.

Devi Dumbadze has a new book in the works, a translation from German to his native Georgian of Theodor Adorno’s Aesthetic Theory. Drawing on his past translations of Adorno, Max Horkheimer and Walter Benjamin, philosopher and translator Devi Dumbadze accomplishes another notable feat by giving Georgian readers for the first time the opportunity to engage with this seminal work. Devi writes, "Theodor W. Adorno is the most prominent representative of the Frankfurt School of critical theory. Aesthetics is at the center of his philosophy, which deals with contemporary society and its conflicts. His posthumously published book Aesthetic Theory (1970) counts as one of the most intriguing philosophical works about art and aesthetics in the twentieth century.

Check out the Visual & Critical Studies courses Classical German Aesthetics and Modern Aesthetics with Devi Dumbadze in the upcoming fall semester.

Shelley Haven tells The Riverdale Press, “I want people to gain an appreciation for artwork and to really see the inside story of how an artist lives. I’m not working when they come in, but they see my work environment. There’s work on the wall, but they get to see me as an artist.” To publicize the 15th year of the YoHo Artist’s Studio open studio, the article takes a closer look at Shelley Haven’s artistic background, subject matter, and more. Haven also exhibited four oil paintings in the recent exhibition, The Wild Side, at the Riverfront Art Gallery in Yonkers.

Our upcoming Pastels course with Shelley Haven is scheduled to begin on September 24.
