Art Lessons for Kids at School of Visual Arts

As part of its mission to meet the diverse needs of the larger community within which the College resides, SVA offers art programs for kids. Youth art classes at SVA are for young people in grades K-9, and are taught by SVA art educators and art education graduate students. Foundations in Art: Grades 3-4-A

Foundations in Art

Grades 3 and 4-A

10 sessions; $220

Mon - Fri., July 14– July 25 

Hours: 10:00 am-11:30 am

Through experimentation with various materials and methods, children will develop their art-making skills and explore personal areas of creative interest. A variety of materials and techniques will be explored, including watercolor, tempera, mixed media, clay and cray-pas, as well as methods in printmaking. Discovering different artists and their work will also be a part of this course.

NOTE: All materials are included in the course tuition.

 

Mixed Media: Grades 5 and 6

Mon - Fri., July 14– July 25 

Hours: 1:00 pm-3:00 pm

Students will explore various age-appropriate techniques and materials used to create two- and three-dimensional works. Mediums such as clay, cardboard, pastel, pencil and tempera paint, as well as found objects will be used. Art historical references will complement studio work. Emphasis will be placed on finding and developing a personal style.

Children are encouraged to express themselves, emphasizing cre­ativity and experimentation through age-appropriate projects, themes and skills. A variety of materials and techniques will be explored, including watercolor, tempera, mixed media, clay and cray-pas, as well as methods in printmaking.

Painting and Drawing : Grades 7 Through 9

Hours: 1:00 pm-3:00 pm

 

Students will develop their drawing and painting skills using direct observation and imagination. Students will explore line, color, shape, perspective and composition. Materials will include pencil, charcoal, watercolor and acrylic paint. Emphasis will be placed on acquiring basic drawing and painting skills, as well as on finding a personal style.

How to Register

Online registration is not available for this program. Registration for Art For Kids courses can ONLY be completed through the MAT Art Education Department. For further information, please contact Anna Roman at 212.592.2445 or e-mail aroman@sva.edu. Space is limited and registration takes place on a first-come, first-served basis.

SVA's art classes for young people in grades K-9 enrich a child's knowledge of art while exploring a wide variety of materials. Classes maintain a teacher-student ratio of one to eight and are taught by SVA art educators and teaching assistants who are also professional artists.

A limited number of need-based scholarships are available. Scholarship recipients will be required to pay a (nonrefundable) $20 processing fee.

 

Program Policies

Punctuality is expected and late arrivals will not be admitted into a class. All children grades K through 5 must be accompanied by an adult to and from each class. Those enrolling in AEC-1014, Grades K Through 2, must be five years of age or older.  Registration for the Summer 2014 semester will become available May 26.
