Art Lessons for Kids at School of Visual Arts

As part of its mission to meet the diverse needs of the larger community within which the College resides, SVA offers art programs for kids. Youth art classes at SVA are for young people in grades K-9, and are taught by SVA art educators and art education graduate students. Foundations in Art: Grades K-2nd

Foundations in Art AEC-1014-A (Grades K-2)

Hours: 10:00 am–11:30 and 1:00pm - 2:00pm

Children are encouraged to express themselves, emphasizing creativity and experimentation through age-appropriate projects, themes and skills. A variety of materials and techniques will be explored, including watercolor, tempera, mixed media, clay, cray-pas, as well as methods in printmaking.

Foundations in Art: Grades 3-4

Photoshop Basics

AEC-1062-A/ Photoshop Basics (Grades 8 and 9)

Hours: 10:00 am–12:00 pm

 Adobe Photoshop is a powerful tool and an essential staple for many creative endeavors. Proficiency in Photoshop is a must for future careers in advertising, design, illustration, cartooning and photography, among many others. In this class students will learn how to navigate through the application and work with layers and masks to create composite images. Adding text and effects as well as how to correct and enhance images will also be addressed. Students will build skills step by step and have fun with various projects along the way.

NOTE: Students must bring a notebook, pen and a 8 GB flash drive.

Portfolio Preparation (Fall only)

AEC-1023-A/Portfolio Preparation (Grades 7 and 8)

Hours: 4:00 pm–6:00 pm

 Designed for students who plan to apply to specialized art high schools, this course will provide instruction in creative techniques and portfolio preparation. Students will expand their knowledge of art ideas and techniques while exploring a variety of materials, including charcoal, pencil, cray-pas, watercolor, and ink and acrylic paints.

Painting and Drawing

AEC-1027-A/Painting and Drawing (Grades 5 and 6)

 (No class: Nov. 26)

Hours: 10:00 am–12:00 pm

 Students will develop their drawing and painting skills using direct observation and imagination. Line, color, shape, perspective and composition will all be explored. Mediums include pencil, charcoal, watercolor and acrylic paint. Emphasis will be placed on finding and developing a personal style.

Hours: 10:00 am–12:00 pm

 In this class, emphasis will be placed on developing basic drawing and painting skills and techniques as well as expand their visual vocabulary.  A variety of media will be used including drawing pencils, pastels, charcoal, acrylic, pen and ink and watercolors. Students will learn the tools and techniques for creating from direct observation as well as their imagination.

NOTE: All materials are included in the course tuition.    

Program Policies

Children are expected to be punctual each day and will not be admitted into a class if they arrive late. All children grades K-6 must be accompanied by an adult to and from each class. Those enrolling in AEC – 1014, Grades K Through 2, must be five years or older.  

Applications/registration will become available May 31.

Note: Space is limited and registration takes place on a first-come, first-serve basis.

How to Register

SVA's art classes for young people in grades K-9 enrich a child's knowledge of art while exploring a wide variety of materials. Classes maintain a teacher-student ratio of one to eight and are taught by SVA art educators and teaching assistants who are also professional artists.

A limited number of need-based scholarships are available. Scholarship recipients will be required to pay a (nonrefundable) $20 processing fee.
