| | OFF-ROADING: The Reinvention of the American Gas-Guzzler
March 23 - April 11, 2009 Reception: Tuesday, March 24, 6 - 8pm
School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “OFF-ROADING: The Reinvention of the American Gas-Guzzler,” an exhibition of work by 3D Design students in the BFA Advertising and Graphic Design Department. Curated by 3D Design chair Kevin O’Callaghan.
Students acquired a 1980 Chevy “Monster” pick up truck, a vehicle known for its fuel inefficiency, averaging approximately nine miles per gallon. They then systematically disassembled it and transformed the parts into functional objects, giving the truck a new life other than the one it was intended to have. The exhibiting artists are Sabina Ciari, Juhee Cho, Cesar De la Vega, Katelyn Hughes, Vanessa Lee, Sarah Nguyen, John O'Callaghan, Eun Jin Oh, Stephen Park, Robert Paternostro, Nicole Penna, Bridget Rhee, Kaori Sakai, Alexej Steinhardt, Benjamin Taylor, Kathleen Ugurlu and David Waelder. Working with every conceivable material, 3D Design students at SVA are accustomed to realizing their biggest ideas and tackling real-world problems as they master crafts like casting, model making, woodworking and welding. Graduates have gone on to successful careers in industrial design, packaging and product design, exhibition design or related field. A concentration in the BFA Advertising and Graphic Design Department at SVA, 3D Design is chaired by Kevin O’Callaghan, whose credits include work in film, theater and television.
