In which Residency Program(s) did you participate?
Painting and Mixed Media, 2012 and 2013
What led you to participate in the Summer Residency Program?
Andrew Castrucci, a faculty member teaching the Continuing Education painting course Between Realism and Abstraction suggested applying for the Summer Residency Program in order to work intensively on what I was learning during the year in one of the most renowned art institutions.
What was the best part of your experience at SVA?
The SVA residency is one of the best programs I have done in my life. Having my own studio and being able to isolate myself in order to work while at the same time being surrounded by ambitious hardworking artists was both inspiring and rewarding. This experience was very valuable and equally important with the work I completed. The best part of the residency was how fulfilled and happy I was feeling every day I was at the studios.
How did the Residency Program contribute to your development as a professional artist, designer, etc?
My work progressed and changed a lot after the residency program. I had the opportunity to experiment and develop new ideas. I arrived at the residency as an abstract oil painter and I am now doing collage, working with mixed media, using my own photographs for my work and even thinking about experimenting with installation. The program also helped me to talk about my work and be confident about it. The critiques we had every day opened my mind and were a very valuable experience. Every single one made me think of something new, a new idea that was then reflected in my work.
What's going on in your studio now?
At the moment my studio is filled with all my new paintings from the residency and I am continuing to work for my solo show in October.
Is there anything else you'd like to share about your experiences in the program or after?
I am honored to be part of the SVA community. This residency exposed me to many opportunities and pushed my work to a level I don’t think I would have reached otherwise. This is the reason why I have already attended it twice and thinking of repeating it again next summer.
