SVA Alumnus Lorna Simpson to Receive This Year's Getty Medal for the Arts

Celebrated photographer and multimedia artist Lorna Simpson (BFA 1982 Photography) will be recognized by the J. Paul Getty Trust this September as one of the recipients of the organization's J. Paul Getty Medal. Given to those who have made significant contributions to the arts and have left others with a deeper understanding and appreciation of it, Simpson will be one of three to receive the award this year. "I am humbled by this honor," she said in an article by The Glow Up.

Brooklyn born and based, Simpson has been making acclaimed work in a variety of media since the mid-1980s. Using her skills as a photographer, collagist and painter, her art often addresses themes of blackness and femininity; it has been exhibited widely and is in the collections of numerous major museums.

A recent article in Artnews examined Simpson's contributions to the arts and introduced the other 2019 Getty Medal recipients. For the full story, click here.
