The SVA RisoLAB was founded in the fall of 2015 by the SVA MFA Visual Narrative department as an interdisciplinary student space for printing, publishing and production of Risograph-based printed works, promoting authorship. Graduate and BFA students, SVA Faculty and staff are welcome, as well as the general public through our continuing education classes, lectures and workshops.
Artists of all backgrounds and disciplines gather here, as we encourage dialogue across different creative worlds and foster discussion about the role of print media as a vehicle for art and culture, and as a method for students to explore creative ideas that would not be possible digitally. Our mission is to be a community of small scale and experimental printing and publishing activity.
Risograph Duplicator printing technology combines the best qualities of traditional printmaking with the speed and automation of digital printing, functioning as a print shop in a box. Their ease of use, print quality and low overhead costs have made them extremely popular among independent publishers, zine makers, graphic designers, photographers, and others who are interested in making quick and vibrant editions on paper.
Students at all levels are welcome to enroll in our Continuing Education or Undergraduate classes. We also offer occasional workshops and lectures that are open to the public. All students who have completed an initial course are eligible to access the RisoLAB for printing in subsequent semesters by paying a lab fee. Graduate students, SVA Faculty and Staff are eligible to attend a two-day training intensive and pay a lab fee to access our facilities.
Students will be trained in the Risograph printing process so that they can maximize the visual impact of their work along with gaining a solid education in print production. Enrolled students can print for up to six hours per week outside of classtime on one of our ten-color three state-of-the-art Risograph ME 9450U or MZ 1090 dual drum duplicators and have full use of our trimming and binding tools.
At the end of each semester, students are invited to participate in the Print Slam, a pop-up exhibition and print sale. Additionally, the SVA RisoLAB hosts an annual call for entries for our Artist-in-Residence program.
The RisoLAB is available for private printing workshops for SVA departments, design firms and creative agencies of all kinds. To explore, please contact the RisoLAB at [email protected].
