BFA Interior Design faculty member Illya Azaroff is spearheading a post-Hurricane Sandy task force, formed by the American Institute of Architects’ New York chapter, to assess the effects of climate change on New York City. Azaroff is the co-chair and co-founder of AIA New York’s Design for Risk and Reconstruction Committee, which is leading this collaborative effort.

The task force includes several representatives from peer organizations that share AIANY’s commitment to sustainable design: The American Planning Association, Structural Engineers Association of New York, American Council of Engineering Companies, Citizens Housing and Planning Council, American Society of Landscape Architects, New York State Association for Affordable Housing, and MTA New York City Transit. Together, they will work with such AIANY committees as Building Codes, the Committee on the Environment, Transportation and Infrastructure, Planning and Urban Design, Health Facilities, Architecture for Education, and Cultural Facilities.

In April, the task force will publish a report assessing current practices in codes and zoning, buildings and building technology, transportation and urban infrastructure, waterfront areas, and housing. The report will also provide short- and long-term recommendations and improvement strategies to help New York City better prepare for the future effects of climate change.
