Writer, educator, artist and radio host, native New Yorker Debbie Millman has had a storied design career culminating in her role as president of the design group for branding consultants Sterling Brands. A noted design advocate, Millman shared her thoughts on how design is essential to our culture on the eve of her Australian speaking tour, organised by Portable, a digital studio and online content producer.

Do you feel comfortable calling yourself a design guru? I don't think that is a word to describe me. If I had to use a word I would use design advocate. I think everything can be improved through design and I believe very strongly in the power of design and the power of designers. I am really confident that designers can solve problems in more ingenious ways than most—outside the whole medical thing.

What is the status of designers? I think design has been given more of a world stage than ever. More people know what designers do, whether fashion, interior design or graphic design, and I think that's very exciting. The world is opened up to what is potentially possible through designers in ways they never have been before. In the US designers are using design to help navigate experiences whether it be better ballot forms or through election messages; design is being used in really powerful ways to help relate messages that might not otherwise be as visible...
