A Brooklyn painter has put his own stamp on how the U.S. celebrates Lunar New Year.

The U.S. Postal Service chose Hong Kong-born Kam Mak, 51, who grew up in Manhattan’s Chinatown and now lives in Cobble Hill, to design 12 New Year stamps—one for each sign in the Chinese zodiac. A new one is released every year.

“To be given the opportunity to use my art to showcase my culture—oh my God. It’s a huge honor. It’s very cool,” said Mak.

For the Year of the Snake, which begins on Feb. 10, Mak painted a string of bright red firecrackers, with bits of crimson paper wrappers in the air. A gold cut-paper snake is embossed on the left side... (continue reading)
