Gary Simmons, a faculty member in both the MFA Art Practice and BFA Fine Arts departments, is the focus of a retrospective surveying the wide range of works he has produced over the last 20 years.  The exhibition includes some of his first chalk drawings, as well as sculptures, paintings, photographs and a 1992 wall drawing not seen since it’s first presentation at the Drawing Center. It also coincides with Damiani’s publication of Gary Simmons: Paradise, which is the first overview of Simmons’s career. Marc Asnin’s (BFA 1985 Photography) latest exhibition features over 25 black and white photographs from his long-term Uncle Charlie series, which began 30 years ago and continues to detail the life of his uncle and godfather, Charles Henschke. Marc Asnin: Uncle Charlie portrays Charlie’s struggle with mental illness, isolation, poverty and familial relationships. “There are few portraits in recent American photography more intimate or remarkable than Marc Asnin’s Uncle Charlie series,” said Michael Kimmelman in The New York Times. The exhibition coincides with the release of the book Uncle Charlie by Marc Asnin (Contrasto, 2012). On view at Steven Kasher Gallery, 521 West 23rd Street, through December 22.

Daniel John Gadd’s (BFA 2008 Fine Arts) current exhibition is not only his solo debut, but it also marks the first time Daniel Cooney Fine Art has held a solo painting exhibition in the gallery’s seven-year history. Influenced by numerous hours spent at the Jersey Shore, Gadd’s thickly layered autobiographic portraits mix paint with objects such as glass, glitter, string and sand.
