The latest edition of SVA’s bi-annual Visual Arts Journal is now available. The Fall 2013 issue considers a new Golden Age in animation lead by a number of SVA alumni; the burgeoning field of social documentary filmmaking and the College’s role in the dynamic New York art world in the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s. The fall issue also features the work of Cody Ryman (BFA 1997 Fine Arts), news about faculty and alumni projects and products, interviews and more.
Among the highlights:
* Q&A with BFA Fine Arts Department faculty member Alice Aycock, who discusses her work and career and a new installation to be featured on Park Avenue next spring.
* A look at the College’s archives in anticipation of the exhibition “Primary Sources: Documenting SVA and the New York Art World, 1966 – 1985.” The exhibit will survey the more than 100 exhibitions, screenings and talks presented by SVA during two of the most remarkable decades in New York art history. In addition to rarely seen documents and other ephemera, the exhibition will feature original works from artist and faculty including Mel Bochner, Donald Kaufman, Dennis Oppenheim, and Eve Sonneman.
* Cody Ryman’s portfolio features work characteristic of his practice, which straddles the line between painting, sculpture and installation. Ryman, who often makes work out of the remnants of old, has exhibited across the U.S. His artwork is included in the permanent collections of the Rubell Family Collection (Miami) and the Raussmuller Collection (Basel, Switzerland) among other institutions.
* The feature “Total Immersion” profiles four alumni of the MFA Social Documentary Film Department who discuss their working process for films about little-known topics such as Indonesian sulfur miners and the international world Yo-yo contest, and cultural groups including the Huaorani in Ecuador.
The fall issue also includes What’s in Store (new products developed by SVA entrepreneurs), Tax Tips for Self Employed Workers, and much more.
Students and visitors can pick up a copy in front of security desks in buildings around campus. If you are a SVA alumnus and do not receive the magazine in the mail, log on or register for the Online Alumni Community to update your contact information.
