In this edition of “The Five,” the work of SVA alumni and faculty is widely woven through cultural and global history, across design, textiles, photography, painting and installation work. This selection of press hits is proof of the SVA community’s impact from New York City to Vietnam, Aspen, the Hudson Valley and beyond.

1. This month, the world lost groundbreaking Vietnamese artist and SVA alumnus Dinh Q. Lê (MFA 1992 Photography, Video and Related Media), known for his exploration of global identity across a multitude of mediums including photography, video and textiles. An obituary in Hyperallergic captures the significance and originality of Le’s work: “Informed by his identities as an immigrant in the United States and a gay man, Lê’s work weaves together the irresolvable themes of identity and changeability, rooted in memory, documentation, and lived experiences in Vietnam.” It continues, “His work embodies this story of reclamation, staking a historical archive for the next generation of artists to weave into their own sense of identity, both individual and collective.”

2. Alumnus Nona Faustine (BFA 1994 Photography and Video) recently spoke to CNN about her new show “White Shoes,” on view at Brooklyn Museum. Her work brings to light the legacy of Black people amid New York City’s complicated history with slavery. “I have never walked into a museum, until recently, and seen myself depicted on the walls the way I want to be represented,” Faustine says. “I want people to understand how far we’ve come. I want them to take pride.”
