SVA at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival

Two films by MFA Computer Art alumni have earned the distinction of “Official Selection” at this year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival, one of the top showcases for animated films in the world, taking place June 13 – 18 in the French Alps. Shift, by 2015 graduates Yijun Liu (2015) and Maria Cecilia Pugliesi (2015), is competing in the Graduate Film category, while Bloody Dairy by Min Liu (2012) is competing in the Short Film category. Both films were chosen from nearly 2,700 applicants from 85 countries.

"We are so pleased to have Maria Cecilia Pugliesi and Yijun Liu, the creators of Shift, and Bloody Dairy by Min Liu included in the festival this year,” says MFA Computer Art Chair Bruce Wands. “It is a testament to their creativity and unique artistic vision, and we are honored that they chose to study animation at SVA’s MFA Computer Art program."

Liu and Pugliese’s film Shift (above) centers on a solitary Victorian-styled woman who has her quiet world suddenly upended by the intrusion of a mysterious (and naked) woman, and explores the process of changing and rediscovering oneself. In addition, other work by Pugliesi has been featured in 39 other festivals and competitions, including the Annie Awards, SIGGRAPH Asia and the View Festival.

Bloody Dairy, which was also selected as a Vimeo “Staff Pick,” is a collection of 100 short animation GIFs, inspired by The Great Discontent’s #the100dayproject. Min Liu’s hand-drawn frames mix surreal imagery with humor, such as a giant-legged cat and a sunbather on a barbecue grill. Liu’s work has been featured around the world, including the 2016 Tricky Women Festival in Vienna, Austria, and the “Speed Show” exhibition in Beijing, China, in 2015.

SVA Career Development Director Angie Wojak will also attend the festival to moderate a panel discussion called Putting Your Best Foot Forward: Animation Talent Search, featuring European- and U.S.-based talent recruiters from Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Pixar and more. The panel will take place on Thursday, June 16, and will feature discussions on what studios are looking for in new talent, as well as methods for students to develop industry-ready demo reels and portfolios that will help them stand out in their field.

An annual celebration of the finest works in animation, Annecy is also a major industry meeting place and showcase of the International Animation Film Market (Mifa) for purchasing, financing, co-producing and distribution of animated films, where Wands and department staff members will represent SVA this year.
