SVA and San Diego Comic-Con: 2019 Preview

The world’s premiere comics convention turns 50 this year and kicks off this weekend, with a handful of SVA alumni artists there to celebrate. Comic-Con International: San Diego, July 18 to 21, is packed with panels, screenings, signings and meet-ups covering a vast array of pop culture fandom—and features everything from anime to sci-fi, classic strips to VR games, Marvel superstars, indie darlings, and more.

For fans looking to turn their passion into practice, Blackbird illustrator Jen Bartel (BFA 2009 Illustration) and Infidel co-creator Aaron Campbell (MFA 2003 Illustration as Visual Essay) will both be in attendance. The two illustrators join a group of Masterclass Artists from Image Comics to discuss their craft, sharing secrets and sources of inspiration with aspiring artists. Comic book artist Shawn Martinbrough (BFA 1993 Illustration) will also give an insider’s take on making comics at Guide to Illustrating Comics: From Sketches to Final Pages. Known for Thief of Thieves, Black Panther and Luke Cage Noir, Martinbrough will talk more in-depth about his latest project on a panel promoting Prométhée 3:13—a prequel to the acclaimed series of French sci-fi bandes dessinées, Prométhée.

The young adult graphic novels from Raina Telgemeier (BFA 2002 Illustration) draw explicitly from real life—her own childhood—and will be featured on two panels this year: Great Graphic Novels for All Ages and Feminist Comics That Rock, both highlighting the strength and diversity of contemporary kids’ comics. In The Factual and The Actual, author and illustrator John Hendrix (MFA 2003 Illustration as Visual Essay) will discuss the potential for exploring science, history, space and other non-fiction topics through sequential art. His young adult graphic novel, The Faithful Spy, told the true story of a World War II resistance fighter and was published last fall.

Last but not least, Stephen Universe creator Rebecca Sugar (BFA 2009 Animation) will join cast members to debut the official trailer for Steven Universe: The Movie arriving this fall, as well as answering audience questions about the trailblazing animated TV show.
