September 29, 2017
Next up in the My First Year series is BFA Design student Shuyue Zhang, who talks about everything from the best feedback she's gotten in class to her biggest challenge in college so far.
WHERE I’M FROM
I’m from China.
WHERE I LIVE NOW
I live in the Ludlow Residence.
WHEN I FIRST KNEW I WANTED TO BE AN ARTIST
In high school. My parents would want me to study and read books, but I was always drawing, painting or designing clothes.
THE TALENT, OUTSIDE OF BEING AN ARTIST, THAT I MOST WISH I HAD
How to dance. I really like dancing!
THE BEST THING ABOUT BEING AN ART STUDENT
I can do a lot of imaginative things. And I can share my ideas with my teachers.
THE BEST FEEDBACK I’VE GOTTEN IN CLASS
To use more color.
THE BEST THING I READ IN MY HUMANITIES AND SCIENCES CLASS THIS YEAR
The Allegory of the Cave by Plato.
THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE ABOUT BEING IN COLLEGE COMPARED TO HIGH SCHOOL
The freedom. I get to try so many different things.
WHERE I WANT TO BE IN FOUR YEARS
I want to work in fashion or movies. I want to show what’s in my mind.
THE BOROUGHS I’VE VISITED
All but Staten Island. I love Queens—Flushing. There are so many Chinese and Korean restaurants.
THE NEW YORK CITY LANDMARK THAT I STILL HAVEN’T VISITED
There are a lot of places I want to visit! I want to go to the Brooklyn Bridge. It’s so beautiful!
MY FAVORITE NEW YORK CITY NEIGHBORHOOD
Chinatown and K-Town—for the food!
THE BEST THING ABOUT LIVING ON CAMPUS
Having a roommate from a different country. We can exchange cultures. She’s from South Korea. And I like a lot of South Korean idols!
THE BIGGEST COOKING MISTAKE I MADE THIS YEAR
Trying to make kimchi. I like going out to eat more.
THE BIGGEST SURPRISE ABOUT ATTENDING SCHOOL IN THE UNITED STATES
The teachers are more like your friends here. In China you call the teachers by their last name, not their first name like at SVA. I really like it.
MY BIGGEST CHALLENGE SO FAR
I feel like I’m not very good at drawing. But my teachers and my classmates have really been helping me.
