My First Year: SVA Student Ellis Edwards

A series in which returning students reflect on their first year at the College

Next up in the My First Year series is BFA Animation student Ellis Edwards, who talks about everything from why she abandoned mechanical engineering to pursue art to where she'd like to be in four years.

WHERE I’M FROM
I’m from Maryland.

WHERE I LIVE NOW
I live in the 23rd Street Residence.

WHEN I FIRST KNEW I WANTED TO BE AN ARTIST
In senior year of high school. I was originally going to be a mechanical engineer but my calculus teacher convinced me that wasn’t going to work out, so I decided to become an artist!

THE TALENT, OUTSIDE OF BEING AN ARTIST, THAT I MOST WISH I HAD
I wish I could speak multiple languages and have conversations with people of different cultures.

THE BEST THING I READ IN MY HUMANITIES AND SCIENCES CLASS THIS YEAR
Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio by Pu Songling.

THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE ABOUT BEING IN COLLEGE COMPARED TO HIGH SCHOOL
I love having afternoon classes—not being at school for seven hours straight.

WHERE I WANT TO BE IN FOUR YEARS
A director—or a storyboard artist. That might be more realistic!

MY FAVORITE NEW YORK CITY MUSEUM
The Met. My favorite exhibition was the Egyptian mummies.

THE BOROUGHS I’VE VISITED
Only Manhattan! Everyone I know has been everywhere. I have to get out—next year!

THE NEW YORK CITY LANDMARK THAT I STILL HAVEN’T VISITED
Times Square. I really want to go but none of my friends will ever go with me!

MY FAVORITE NEW YORK CITY NEIGHBORHOOD
The West Village. I love it there—it’s so beautiful!

THE CRAZIEST THING I ATE THIS YEAR
A couple of my Indian friends were popping these things into their mouths and I asked what they were. They gave me one and told me to try it before they’d tell me what it was. It tasted like rotten eggs and every spice in the world. It turns out to be a “chewable spice” called hajmola that’s used as a laxative.

THE BIGGEST COOKING MISTAKE I MADE THIS YEAR
I’ve been trying to make spaghetti for the longest time and the noodles just clump together!

THE BEST PLACE TO GET SOMETHING TO EAT NEAR CAMPUS
Schnippers! I love their smoothies.
