My First Year: SVA Student Carlos Flores

A series in which returning students reflect on their first year at the College

Next up in the My First Year series is BFA Fine Arts sophomore Carlos Flores, who talks about everything from the best thing about being an art student to his biggest laundry mistake.

WHERE I’M FROM
I’m from Aurora, Illinois.

WHERE I LIVE NOW
I live at the 23rd Street Residence.

WHEN I FIRST KNEW I WANTED TO BE AN ARTIST
I would give up my lunch hours to paint in the art room.

THE TALENT, OUTSIDE OF MY ARTISTIC TALENT, THAT I MOST WISH I HAD
I wish I could sing.

THE BEST THING ABOUT BEING AN ART STUDENT
Knowing you’re passionate about what you do.

THE BEST THING ABOUT GOING TO COLLEGE IN NEW YORK CITY
It’s very liberating being in the city, just doing what you want, and you get a lot of inspiration just from being around so many different artists.

WHAT I’M READING IN MY HUMANITIES AND SCIENCES CLASS NOW
Ceremony by Leslie Marmon Silko.

THE BEST FEEDBACK I’VE RECEIVED IN CLASS
“Don’t get so committed to one brushstroke, just paint and know that you’re a good enough artist to fix any little mistake afterwards.” Summer Porter, faculty.

THE MOST SURPRISING THING I’VE LEARNED SINCE COMING TO SVA
Wait, so there truly isn’t a meal plan?

WHERE I WANT TO BE IN FOUR YEARS
Making art and exhibiting around New York.

MY FAVORITE NEW YORK CITY MUSEUM
The Frick. It’s amazing to see art firsthand that you’ve studied in class.

THE BOROUGHS I’VE VISITED
All but Staten Island.

THE NEW YORK CITY LANDMARK THAT I STILL HAVEN’T VISITED
The Statue of Liberty.

THE BEST PLACE TO GET SOMETHING TO EAT NEAR CAMPUS
Halal lamb over rice from the Habibi food cart.

THE CRAZIEST THING I ATE LAST YEAR WAS
A frozen Uncrustable.

MY FAVORITE NEW YORK CITY NEIGHBORHOOD
Chelsea—SVA’s West 21st Street studios are there and I always go and paint there in my free time.

THE BEST WAY TO GET AROUND NEW YORK CITY
Longboard, if you’re going somewhere close. Otherwise, the subways are the next best thing.

THE BEST THING ABOUT LIVING ON CAMPUS
The tour guides that comment on your sleeping habits.

MY BIGGEST LAUNDRY MISTAKE
Not using the free washers and dryers at the 24th Street Res!
