Anthony Rhodes and Kaori Uchisaka Visit Universities in Japan

Executive vice president Anthony Rhodes and Kaori Uchisaka, director of the International Student Office, recently visited two universities in Tokyo as part of an outreach and relationship-building effort in Japan.

Their first stop was Musashino Art University (known locally as "Musabi"), one of the country’s top art and design universities, where they met with president Tadanori Nagasawa and the International Relations team. Together they discussed the state of art and design education in Japan, government subsidies for higher education, the challenges of recruiting Japanese art and design students to study abroad, and Musabi's history of exchanges with other prominent art and design institutions in the U.S.

Rhodes and Uchisaka later visited Joshibi University of Art and Design, with whom SVA has a memorandum of understanding. At Joshibi they met with president Katsuki Yokoyama, as well as vice president Nobue Kobayashi and coordinator Maiko Yamazaki, the latter of whom had visited SVA in February with a group of 20 Joshibi students participating in a three-week workshop hosted by the Office of Programs for International Students. Kobayashi gave a comprehensive presentation about Joshibi and outlined the process of developing a new program for Joshibi students to complete their two-year Junior College program and transfer to SVA's BFA degree program in the third year. The Joshibi University representatives were presented with a gift of two of the SVA subway posters.

Reflecting on the trip, Rhodes says the university visits were “an important first step in reinvigorating recruitment and extending the reach of our career development and alumni networking programs in a market full of potential and promise. And there's nothing like being in Japan during Sakura!"
