School of Visual Arts presents “The Red Room,” an installation-based exhibition by BFA Interior Design students. The exhibition, organized by fourth-year students Erin Checkosky, Dina Said and Martin Manh Ngo, will be on view from Saturday, December 1, 2018, through Saturday, January 5, 2019, at the SVA Flatiron Gallery, 133/141 West 21st Street, New York City.
Earlier this year, BFA Interior Design students presented their work as part of Dining by Design, an industry-leading event known for its worthy cause and successful fundraising as much as its exceptional design. The exhibition event invites participants to transform a raw space into an immersive dining exhibit and is the signature fundraiser of Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS (DIFFA), a coalition of design companies and firms that raises awareness and funds for HIV/AIDS research, education, treatment and advocacy. Held within the Architectural Digest Design Show, industry professionals and members of the public were able to view the nearly 40 installations before the showcase closed with a gala dinner wherein patrons dined at the styled tables, in support of the organization’s cause.
For the current exhibition, the BFA Interior Design program’s Dining by Design booth, originally organized by faculty member Maureen Crilly, has been recreated within the SVA Flatiron Gallery. The project’s designers—fourth-year student Erin Checkosky and 2018 alumni Anna Harea, Runxue Guo and Brandon Perler— described their work in this way:
By creating a visual representation of the HIV/AIDS awareness movement, the Red Room incorporates cylindrical elements to create a sense of unity and a celestial aurora that emphasizes the feeling of hope and prosperity.
Accompanying this installation are digital presentations of projects by first- through fourth-year BFA Interior Design students.
