The SVA Theatre at the School of Visual Arts, in association with the Los Angeles Music Video Festival, presents an evening of award-winning music videos by The Shins, Tenacious D, Matt & Kim, Solange Knowles and others, plus a conversation with top-name directors, cinematographers and musicians about the art of the music video. The screening features 14 selected videos by winners and finalists from the 2013 Los Angeles Music Video Festival.
Moderated by Bob Giraldi, chair of the MPS Live Action Short Film Department and director of such acclaimed music videos as Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” and Pat Benatar’s “Love is a Battlefield,” panelists include cinematographer Christopher Walters, whose credits include The Red Balloon and videos for 50 Cent and Snoop Lion; Steven Gottlieb, founder and editor of VideoStatic.com; and Scott Reich, vice president, original content and programming, VEVO.
“SVA Rocks!” is the result of a new partnership between SVA Theatre and the Los Angeles Music Video Festival. According to Adam Natale, director of the theatre, “Music video is one of the most iconic and ubiquitous art forms in pop culture. By joining forces with LAMVF, we’re bringing the best of the best new videos to the big screen here in New York and hearing from pioneers and rising stars in the industry. Everyone is invited.”
Festival founder Sami Kriegstein says, “As partners with the School of Visual Arts, LAMVF proudly shares its mission with the creative community at SVA and New York City. Our community is young, aspirational, tech-savvy and unintimidated by micro-budgets and global distribution. Despite changes in the industry, there is a music video renaissance unfolding all around us.”
The Los Angeles Music Video Festival, now entering its fourth year, celebrates the art of the music video. While many film festivals have music video categories, there are almost no annual live festivals in the United States—and only a handful in the world—dedicated 100% to the format. LAMVF strives to become the premier American music video festival, complete with categories of competition, professional judges, prizes, speaker panels, workshops and live music performances. It has curated the hundreds of music videos submitted from over 30 countries worldwide. The 2014 LAMVF call for entries is open now; categories of competition, deadlines and rules are at lamvf.com.
