School of Visual Arts presents “Gamblers All,” an exhibition of work by SVA students selected by a jury of their peers. Organized by SVA Galleries, “Gamblers All” is on view Friday, August 14, through Saturday, September 19, at the SVA Flatiron Gallery, 133/141 West 21st Street, New York City.

“Gamblers All” presents art inspired by observational moments and memories rooted in the exhibiting artists’ daily routines. Titled after Charles Bukowski’s poem of the same name, the selected works range from absurd to mystical to nostalgic to traumatic, mimicking the broad scope of Bukowski’s work. The exhibition includes photography, installation-based sculpture and paintings that explore the connection between material and conceptual concerns.

Participating artists include Nicasio Fernandez, Fiorella Gonzales, Stephan Jahanshahi, Tali Margolin, Michelle Ricci, and Ji Won Sim.

Nicasio Fernandez’s (BFA Fine Arts) paintings are a collision of puns, high and low culture, art history, pornography, cartoons and personal experiences.

Fiorella Gonzalez (MFA Fine Arts) presents sculptural installations that interact with the architecture and ornamentation of a space to provoke uncanny sensations within familiar surroundings.

Stephan Jajanshahi (MFA Photography, Video and Related Media) explores photographic processes and materials in his body of work “The Year of Endless Distance,” challenging assumptions associated with the medium.

Through haunting mixed-media paintings, Tali Margolin (BFA Fine Arts) presents visions of place, time and perception inspired by personal memories.

Michelle Ricci (BFA Photography) translates traumatic feelings into physical form by adhering photo collages onto her body and documenting the process as a method of storytelling.

In her “Revelation” series of paintings, Ji Won Sim (BFA Fine Arts) communicates emotions and thoughts through organic and geometric shapes.

Juried exhibitions are a way for SVA’s student body to recognize the achievements of their classmates. Artists are selected from a large pool of applicants through a rigorous examination of presented materials, including documentation of work and artist statements.
