Overview

The BFA Fine Arts Department at the School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “Books and Prints,” an exhibition co-curated by faculty members Gunars Prande and David Sandlin and including artworks by current BFA Fine Arts students Maria Babikova and Young Joo Sung; BFA Illustration and Cartooning students Boyoun Kim, Sue Jean Ko, Amanda Konishi, Yuna Lee, Courtney Menard, Darragh Rosenberger, Alex Rupert, and Julienne Tan; and BFA Advertising and Design student Heesang Lee. The exhibition will be on view February 2 – 16 at the Visual Arts Gallery, 601 West 26 Street, 15th floor, New York City.

Gunars Prande offers the following statement about the prints in the exhibition:
“Coming to printmaking, artists bring their personal interests and vision and try to express themselves through a new medium. The inherent restrictions and qualities of the different techniques that make up printmaking affect what is made. The artists in this show work with multiple narratives and sequential images. The meaning of the work is usually built up from the sum of the parts they have given us. The mediums used include lithography, silkscreen, etching, as well as the use of laser printed images, painting and bookbinding.”

David Sandlin, addressing the silkscreen books, says, “Like printmaking, the artist's book attracts people from all kinds of disciplines—painting, sculpture, graphic design, illustration and others. The form allows the artists to create a complete world through which they can guide the viewer. If there's a common theme in this selection, it might be the anxiety of contemporary life.”
