Student Artwork Update: Mark Monroy

STUDENTS SHARE THEIR ARTWORK AT SVACE

We are pleased to present art by Mark Monroy. Mark created this artwork in conjunction with Steve Brodner’s course, Illustration: Rules of the Road.

Mark writes:

"Like a lot of folks at SVA CE, I’m a dreamer with a day job, good at channeling my restlessness through a pencil, but clueless about finding a market for my talent. Steve Brodner’s “Rules of the Road” class has helped me to up my illustration game, pushing me to marry my drawing and cartooning skills with impactful visual storytelling. Beyond that, Brodner has demystified the business aspects of illustration, from building a portfolio, to getting a foothold with contacts in the publishing industry, and the critical minutiae in between.

As I look at my three most successful pieces from the Summer session, which were prompted by newspaper and magazine articles selected by Brodner, I see a common thread in my fascination with people’s inner lives. We’ve all had that feeling of being alone in a crowd—sometimes it’s frightening, and sometimes it’s freeing. And, if you undertake the effort to get to the heart of the matter, it can make for an interesting story.

On another note, these pieces were all produced digitally, on an iPad Pro, using an app called Procreate. If you’re into traditional media, drawing on a big slab of glass can take some getting used to, but I love that it offers an opportunity to experiment with different virtual media, color palettes, and compositions, without starting from scratch. I’m happy to answer any questions about my digital workflow, and I’d love to learn from yours. Hit me up at [email protected]"
