We are pleased to present art from Pax and Blue, a children's book by SVACE student Lori Richmond. Lori created this artwork in conjunction with the Illustration & Cartooning courses, Writing and Illustrating Children's Books, Children's Book Illustration, Gouache, and Collage Improv. Pax and Blue is written and illustrated by Lori Richmond with editor Paula Wiseman and art director Krista Vossen, published by Simon & Schuster/Paula Wiseman Books, 2017.
Lori Richmond writes:
"Pax and Blue follows the unlikely friendship between a young boy and a city pigeon. This gentle story reminds children and their grown-ups that, even in a busy and crowded city, there are always opportunities to be kind.
The textured spine and limited color palette are a modern twist on classic picture book design. Because the story focuses on a moment between two friends and is not about the city itself, the limited palette allows Pax and Blue to stand out against their environment. Visually blurring the background people and scenery together in the same purple-gray wash gives a sense of the surroundings but allows the reader to remain focused on the emotions between the characters."
