From MoCCA Fest 2019

SVA Continuing Education Proudly Sponsored MoCCA Arts Festival

To promote the professional development of comics artists, cartoonists, and illustrators, SVA Continuing Education (SVACE) stepped forward to support the 2019 MoCCA Arts Festival. SVACE exclusively sponsored the entire MoCCA Arts Festival programming, while co-organizing and sponsoring MoCCA's Professional Development discussion series. And we had a blast!

"SVACE has always been a hub for creativity, entrepreneurship and community,” says Keren Moscovitch, Associate Director, Division of Continuing Education (and faculty member). "MoCCA Fest exemplifies these values, and provides an amazing platform for illustrators and comic artists to pave their own road to success in this industry.”

"It was really inspiring to see so many driven, creative people in one space, feeding off of each others’ energies and supporting each others’ projects, she adds. "It was also exciting to see SVA’s tremendous footprint, from SVACE to MFA Visual Narrative, the Riso Lab, and all the amazing SVA faculty and alumni who were there to share new work and insights."

Faculty members Viktor Koen and Will Varner spoke in "Professional Development 101: Art Directors’ Roundtable“ where they addressed questions like, "What are art directors looking for and how do they find artists ready to work again and again?”

And Andrea Tsurumi of SVA Summer Residencies participated in "Professional Development 102: Artists’ Roundtable,” speaking about ways artists sustain and develop their work and their careers.

“This is where our institution finds its true calling: by connecting art with industry, and talent with purpose."
Viktor Koen
SVACE faculty member

Viktor Koen observes, "Other than a vibrant celebration of sequential art, cartooning and illustration, MoCCA presented a phenomenal programming section...in direct collaboration with SVA's Continuing Education Division. These standing-room only panels discussed the business of image-making from two diametrically different vantage points — art directors who commission and the artists who execute the art. Opportunities to analyze our industry through expertise and (brutal) honesty of such caliber are rare, but this is where our institution finds its true calling: by connecting art with industry, and talent with purpose. Co-curating with Director of MoCCA programing Bill Kartalopoulos, and moderating the Art Directors’ Roundtable, was a personal highlight, realizing an idea nine months in the making."

"I left MoCCA again feeling that working hard, being open, and trying new things will be the key to facing future challenges."
Will Varner
SVACE faculty member

Will Varner reflects, "I've attended and tabled at MoCCA for years now and I'm always impressed with the high level of creativity on display and the strong sense of community I feel there. As a panel member for the first time, I felt a heavy burden to really provide information that would be useful to attendees. I know that I've gained a lot from hearing art directors share their work process, so I felt a real responsibility to provide that for others, especially emerging creators. Fortunately, my fellow panelists came with so much great experience, insight, and empathy that it felt like easy lifting for me. In the end, I feel everyone who attended (especially me) learned a lot. As always, the future of comics and illustration is in flux, but I left MoCCA again feeling that working hard, being open, and trying new things will be the key to facing future challenges."

Faculty members Sara Varon and Natalya Balnova also exhibited their art at MoCCA, sharing updates to their projects in silkscreen prints, posters, artist’s books, and more.

Thank you to everyone who visited, and we’re excited to welcome all to our summer semester!
