Visit our ContinuEd Project Spaces, where we are pleased to present an exhibition of paintings by Kardelen Fincancı, who is a recent SVACE Residency alumnus. Fincancı created this work in conjunction with ‘City as Site - Public Art as Social Intervention. This exhibition will be on view throughout November in our exhibition spaces located at 209 East 23rd Street and 380 2nd Ave, 8th floor.
Kardelen Fincancı writes that she "creates installations and performance pieces as a means to demonstrate how art can contribute to social change through activism. She utilizes public space or memory of the space as a medium for her art and a platform to interact with an audience. She believes that the collective structure of public space allows for an intervention and thus opens the doors of social change by engaging with the public."
Kardelen Fincancı finished her MA thesis on ‘A Debate of Activism Over The Art Practices in Public Space After 1980,’ and graduated from the Art and Design Program of Yildiz Technical University in 2019. Fincancı was selected for the residency program ‘City as Site - Public Art as Social Intervention’ at the School of Visual Arts in 2014. She was also one of the selected artists of curator Nesli Gül Durukan for her curatorial residency in Sazmanab Platform for Contemporary Arts in Iran in 2012. Fincancı has participated in exhibitions and public art projects throughout Turkey, the United States and Iran since 2008. Fincancı had worked as an artist / coordinator with fellow psychiatrists and psychologists on the art therapy project, ‘Social and Cognitive Rehabilitation with Art for Wernicke Korsakoff Syndrome’ from 2014 to 2017 at the Human Rights Foundation in Turkey. Fincancı still continues to work in the fields of art and social practices.
