This course explores the narrative properties and potential of the immersive video environment. We will concentrate on the numerous implications of the relationships among the artist, the moving image, sound, three-dimensional space and the audience, as well as on the use of these complex relationships to convey meaning. Class time will employ electronic media presentation, analog and digital technical instruction, discussion and student experimentation. The intention of the course is to provide students with a fundamental knowledge of antecedents of video installation as well as basic skills of spatial conceptualization through diagraming and 3D computer modeling (using the free version of SketchUp), with the ultimate goal for students to develop and design their own video installation projects. Adobe Premiere Pro will be used in class. NOTE: Prior knowledge of basic video editing is preferred, but not required.
