In this course, students will be encouraged to explore a personal visual language that is influenced by their own history of visual experiences and development. We will begin with drawing from imagination, to explore new ideas through the drawing process itself and produce drawings that differ from conventional images. Through exercises, and by looking at real-world examples, we will explore illustration as an art that condenses information and contains a central meaning in order to speak clearly to its audience in a compelling and graphic way. Weekly assignments range from illustrating a piece of short fiction to book jackets and editorial work. All of the steps involved in making a successful illustration from conceptualization to finished art will be addressed. Note: Please bring samples of your work and sketching materials to the first session.
