This course explores public art. It encompasses graffiti, conceptual art, land art, intervention and community-oriented projects in public spaces. We will be studying the roots and psychology of graffiti art, from Roman times to 20th-century political interventions to graffiti's codification as part of hip-hop culture. We will be studying the rise of public work as part of conceptual practice, land art and publicly funded sculptural projects. We will also consider the concept of art as intervention in the public sphere (from Dada to Punk), billboard art, performance art and time-based works. In short, the historical element of this course is aimed to give a brief overview of art that exists outside the gallery setting, and its intentions. We will discuss the work of Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Robert Smithson, Keith Haring, Colab, Group Material, Christo, Richard Serra, graffiti artists and projects curated by Kasper König. The course will combine lectures and discussions, slideshows, exhibitions and readings, as well as some written assignments and/or artworks made related to topics covered in class. Students will create work throughout the course and may work in a variety of mediums, including painting, sculpture, drawing, video, photography, performance or text.
