Students are encouraged to adopt a disciplined yet playful creative process. Assignments are paper-based; materials include Color-aid paper, gouache and found materials. Students will mainly use traditional art tools like pencils, brushes and X-acto knife; computers and digital devices are useful but optional. The goal of this course is for each student to develop a new awareness of color, and create a toolkit of ideas to enhance and strengthen their ability to design in color.

Description

Ever tried to slap glue on a stack of paper and sandwich it between cardboards to make a book? If the result was less than what you had hoped for, this course is for you. We will cover techniques for making a hardcover book with sewn signatures and a slipcover to match, a side-sewn book, an accordion-fold book, and a small singlesignature brochure with a soft cover. There will be demonstrations and a lot of hands on work. The focus will be on the craft of making books, rather than the design aspects of what's inside. By the end of the course, you will know the difference between scoring and creasing paper, why grain direction matters, how to make paste right in your own kitchen and, most importantly, how to create quality books that are uniquely yours.
