The course begins with a practical overview of Maya, from its intuitive interface to project management. Building from this foundation, basic techniques in modeling, animation, lighting and rendering will be addressed. By the end of the course, students will have created a 10-second animation piece. The course is an introduction to a sophisticated application; previous experience with a 3D program is highly recommended.

This course will give an introduction to the Houdini interface, procedural modeling, particles and dynamics. We will also cover some of Houdini's expression functions, which give creative control to produce powerful visual effects and models. Projects will include the creation of procedural landscapes, explosive particle effects and a basic crowd/flocking simulation. The concepts and techniques covered, such as Houdini's procedurally based workflow and rigid body dynamics, will show you how to get the most out of this impressive software in the same way studios do for commercial and film productions.

Description

Lighting and rendering for production is the focus of this course. Technical and aesthetic overviews of lighting and workflow for studio, presentation, film and special effects will be addressed, as well as tonal evaluation of image, color and temperature. Topics will include: shadows, soft shadow, control, light types, lighting setup and control, custom light control interface design, raytracing, mental ray versus Maya renderer, caustics, Final Gathering, global illumination. Rendering issues will include advanced shaders and shading networks, Maya/mental ray shaders, rendering in layers, batch rendering, command line rendering, render scripts, camera, lens, shutter attributes, camera animation and cinematography. We will compare and contrast digital techniques with a variety of traditional approaches to lighting used in classical painting, photography and film.

Description

This course will focus on two essential skills for creating character animation in Autodesk Maya-rigging and animating a character. Students will study Disney's "Rules of Animation" and apply them to 3D character motion. We will then examine how to properly rig and animate a character to create an effective scene. A bi-pedal rig will be provided for students to adapt to their own model. Lectures and assignments will address the principles of animation and techniques that work. Topics will include: how a rig deforms a model, how a rig functions as a "user interface" for the animator and how to edit animations creating a library of animation with Maya's Trax editor. Students will create a fully rigged and animated character.
