This course maps the major movements and tendencies in modern art beginning with the realism of Courbet in the 19th century and continuing through pop art in the 20th century, including impressionism, postimpressionism, symbolism, fauvism, cubism, futurism, expressionism, Dada, surrealism, abstract expressionism and pop art. The art will be discussed in terms of the individual artist's intent as well as in terms of historical events and cultural issues at the times in which they were created. Museum field trips are an important part of the course. (class will be held on Tuesday, July 3)
