The Book Show
Through December 13
An exhibition of books by students in the MFA Illustration as Visual Essay Department. The works on view include children’s books, graphic novels and comic books and explore themes from treasure-hunting to hydrophobia. Curated by Department Chair Marshall Arisman and faculty member Carl Nicholas Titolo.

Credible Correspondence (Travels of the Imagination)
Through December 13
In an age when letter writing has all but disappeared, the postcard endures as a form of personal correspondence, connecting people through time and space. This exhibition of works by first- and second-year students in the MFA Illustration as Visual Essay Department features found and fabricated postcards, all bearing the marks of passage and postage. Curated by faculty member Carl Nicholas Titolo.

The Call of Cthulhu

An exhibition of sequential narratives based on the 1928 horror story The Call of Cthulhu by H.P. Lovecraft. Unified only in their depiction of “the ultimate monster,” the images take many forms, including paintings on wood, ink drawings, watercolors and digital compositions of typography. Curated by faculty member Viktor Koen.

Pat Kirkham: Writing Critical Monographs
Tuesday, December 2, 6pm
Pat Kirkham has written extensively on the intersections of design, gender and film and is a professor of design history and cultural studies at the Bard Graduate Center in New York. Her recent publications include Charles and Ray Eames: Designers of the Twentieth Century (1998) and Women Designers in the USA, 1900-2000: Diversity and Difference (2002). Her latest book, on the work of graphic designer and filmmaker Saul Bass, examines short films he made in collaboration with his wife Elaine. Presented by the MFA Design Criticism Department.

Byron Kim

Byron Kim garnered international recognition for his contribution to the 1993 Whitney Biennial, Synecdoche, a multi-panel, minimalist grid that uses a palette of specific diverse skin tones to explore racial and social identities. Kim’s body of work includes landscape and photographic assemblages in addition to the masterful monochromes for which he is best known. Presented by the BFA Fine Arts and Visual and Critical Studies Departments.

An evening dedicated to the memory of Paul Brach, the celebrated and highly influential artist, teacher and founding dean of Cal Arts. Participants include Connie Fox, artist and teacher; Bill King, artist and former president, National Academy of Design; and Allan Hacklin, artist and professor of art. Molly Barnes, art dealer and radio personality, will moderate.

The Interviewers

In anticipation of its fall 2009 opening, the MFA Interaction Design Department at SVA presents “Dot Dot Dot,” a monthly public lecture series exploring interaction design, business and aesthetic inspiration. This month, four practitioners will explore the integral role interviewers play in shaping the final outcome of a project. Gary Hustwit, director, Helvetica, Objectified; Jason Severs, principal designer, frog design; Clive Thompson, contributing writer for The New York Times Magazine and columnist for Wired; and Elisabeth M. De Morentin, Illinois Institute of Technology, Institute of Design, will explain how to get answers using disparate and unexpected research methods. Presented by the MFA Interaction Design Department.

Chee Pearlman: Designing the Live Content Experience

Chee Pearlman, director of the editorial and curatorial design consultancy Chee Company, has written for Newsweek, Travel + Leisure, Popular Science and The New York Times and is the former editor-in-chief of I.D. Magazine. She served as program director of the Art Center Design Conference in Los Angeles and founded the Chrysler Design Awards. Presented by the MFA Design Criticism Department.

Family Sculpting

Internationally recognized family therapist Peggy Papp will demonstrate “family sculpting,” a therapeutic technique she developed in which family members position themselves and each other in a tableau that represents family roles and interactions. The therapist then helps them to construct a more harmonious picture. For this presentation, the audience will be invited to participate in the living sculpture. Presented by the MPS Art Therapy Department.

W.J.T. Mitchell: The Future of the Image
Thursday, December 11, 7pm
Scholar and theorist of media, art and literature W.J.T. Mitchell will discuss the work of Jacques Ranciere, a contemporary French philosopher whose writings on the relationship between contemporary art and politics have garnered much attention in the art world. Mitchell is a well-known figure in the fields of visual culture and iconology, a professor of English and art history at the University of Chicago and the editor of the interdisciplinary journal Critical Inquiry. Presented by the MFA Art Criticism and Writing Department.

Covering architecture, design and culture, Cathleen McGuigan is a senior editor and writer at Newsweek and has written for The New York Times Magazine, Smithsonian, Rolling Stone, Harper's Bazaar and ArtNews. She is also an adjunct professor at the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University and was a Loeb Fellow at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. Presented by the MFA Design Criticism Department.

The Camera Club of New York Presents: Michal Chelbin

Based in New York City, Israeli-born photographer Michal Chelbin has shown in solo and group shows in the U.S. and Europe, most recently at Andrea Meislin Gallery in New York. She has done editorial work for The New York Times, The New Yorker, New York Magazine and Ten Men Magazine and her most recent monograph is entitled Strangely Familiar: Acrobats, Athletes and Other Traveling Troupes (Aperture, 2008).
