Summering in Venice and Rome to study visual communication in the birthplace of Western typographic tradition is a not-to-be-missed experience. You’ll visit the Trajan Column, the Pantheon and the Arch of Titus, and examine the ancient inscriptions on Roman buildings and monuments that have long been a typographic ideal. This workshop, emphasizing typography, is designed to encourage personal exploration, and is structured to interest advanced students and design professionals. Taught by some of the leading Italian and American professionals in the design community, you can expect an intensive period of study in design history, theory and practice making it possible for you to research and analyze the roots of typography with plenty of time built in for analysis and critiques of your work. The program emphasizes the multidisciplinary nature of contemporary design influenced by today’s architecture, art, literature and even cuisine. Collaborations with noted Italian design organizations and businesses will result in projects for publication as well as creating products to go into production. The opportunity to visit some of the best sites in Italy and to learn from company principals is a strong incentive to join us this summer as a practical investment for your design career.

Prerequisite: Students must be at least seniors in a design or art college, or design professionals. A portfolio and an interview (in-person or by phone) are required for acceptance to this program.
