The Alumni Society of School of Visual Arts provides a wide variety of scholarships and awards to students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in all majors offered by the College.

The Alumni Society currently administers the Alumni Scholarship Fund, whose programs include Alumni Scholarship Awards, the Housing Scholarship Award, the Merit Award and more than a dozen named scholarship funds.

Alumni Scholarship Award Fund


Alumni Scholarship Awards are given to final year undergraduate and graduate students to aid in completion of their thesis/portfolio project. These cash awards are intended to cover project expenses, and range from $500 to $2,000, depending on the student's project budget. Applications are ranked by an alumni panel whose recommendations are approved by The Alumni Society Board of Directors. An annual total of $40,000 in scholarships has been awarded each year since 2008. Applications are available each October. Anyone in their final year at SVA who is interested in applying for an Alumni Scholarship Award can learn more here. A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher is required to qualify for this award.

727 Award Fund


The 727 Award Fund was established in 2005 by a group of Advertising and Graphic Design alumni headed by Todd Radom (BFA 1986 Graphic Design), a member of The Alumni Society's Board of Directors. The 727 Fund is designated for students in graphic design, illustration, cartooning and advertising.

Alumni Society Housing Scholarship Fund


The Alumni Society Housing Scholarship Fund provides on-campus housing for an incoming freshman or transfer student who would otherwise be forced to commute from home. Each year since 2006, this scholarship has been awarded to cover the cost of on-campus housing for the duration of the student's study at SVA (not to exceed four years). The scholarship does not cover the cost of meals, and applicants must be able to demonstrate an ability to cover the costs of food and other expenses associated with living on campus. A panel of alumni and administrators reviews applicants for this award.

Alumni Society Merit Award


The Alumni Society Merit Award has been given annually since 2001 to a BFA candidate who has demonstrated community building and leadership excellence during his or her time at SVA. Nominees for this $1,000 award are selected by the Office of Student Life and reviewed by a panel of alumni and administrators.

William C. Arkell Memorial Award Fund


The William C. Arkell Memorial Award Fund was established in 2002 by an anonymous SVA alumnus. This annual $5,000 award is made in support of a senior thesis project by an undergraduate film/video student working in the narrative film genre. Applications are available each October for film/video majors working on a narrative film of any length; animation and documentary work are not eligible. A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher is required to be eligible; award decisions are made by a panel of distinguished SVA alumni working in the field of narrative film.

Ellsworth Ausby Memorial Award Fund


The Ellsworth Ausby Memorial Award Fund was established in 2011 in memory of longtime SVA fine arts instructor Ellsworth Ausby (BFA 1975 Advertising). This award is designated to support a senior thesis project by an undergraduate or graduate student working in fine arts.

Robert I. Blumenthal Memorial Award Fund


The Robert I. Blumenthal Memorial Award Fund was established in 2002 by Anthony Porpora (1956 Advertising), a close friend of Robert Blumenthal and the personal representative of his estate. It is designated for the benefit of an undergraduate graphic design student. This $1,000 award is given annually to the highest-ranked graphic design student in the Alumni Scholarship Award applicant pool.

DaVinci Award Fund


The DaVinci Award Fund, funded by DaVinci Artist Supply (previously the Shakespeare & Co. Award, funded by the Shakespeare & Co. bookstore from 2003 to 2011), annually is given to one or more students graduating from the BFA Illustration and Cartooning Department whose final project is an illustrated book or graphic novel. The award process for this $2,500 grant is overseen by the BFA Cartooning and Illustration Department.

Will Eisner Sequential Art Award Fund


The Will Eisner Sequential Art Award Fund was established in 2008 in memory of SVA faculty member Will Eisner, whose work was key to establishing the graphic novel as a form of literature. As the award's name suggests, it is designated for students whose work is in sequential art.

The Jack Endewelt Memorial Award Fund was established in 2007 in memory of longtime SVA chair, instructor and alumnus Jack Endewelt (1935-2006) (BFA 1984 Illustration). This award is designated for undergraduate illustration and cartooning majors.

Amelia Geocos Memorial Award Fund


The Amelia Geocos Memorial Award Fund was established in 2008 in memory of Amelia Geocos (2007 BFA Fine Arts) by her parents Marian and Cliff Geocos. This annual award of $1,000 is given to the highest-ranked undergraduate fine arts student in the Alumni Scholarship Award applicant pool whose work is video- and/or performance-based and who is committed to continuing studio practice after graduation.

Bob Guglielmo Memorial Award Fund


The Bob Guglielmo Memorial Award Fund was established in 2003 in memory of former Office of Alumni Affairs Director and SVA alumnus Bob Guglielmo (BFA 1984 Cartooning). At the request of Bob's family, the fund was established to enable Bob's friends, classmates and colleagues to make donations in his memory. This annual award of $1,000 is given to the highest-ranked undergraduate cartooning student in the Alumni Scholarship Award applicant pool.

James Richard Janowsky Award Fund

The James Richard Janowsky Award Fund was established in 2012 by James Janowsky, who is a filmmaker and faculty member at School of Visual Arts. This annual $1,000 award is made in support of a senior thesis project by an undergraduate film/video student working in the narrative film genre. Jack Potter Memorial Award Fund


The Jack Potter Memorial Award Fund was established in 2002 to commemorate longtime SVA drawing faculty member Jack Potter (1928-2002) and to enable Jack's friends and colleagues to make donations in his memory. This $2,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a freshman foundation program student with exceptional drawing skills. Nominees are selected by the Office of Admissions and reviewed by a panel of alumni and administrators.

Thomas Reiss Memorial Award Fund


An award fund in memory of Thomas Reiss (MFA 1993 Photography and Related Media) was established in 2003 by Tom's brother, Richard M. Reiss. Tom, who was an avid environmentalist, died in August 2002 in a boating accident in Thailand. This $1,000 scholarship is given to the highest-ranked MFA Photography, Video and Related Media Department student in the Alumni Scholarship Award applicant pool whose final project addresses a humanitarian issue.

Silas H. Rhodes Memorial Award Fund


The Silas H. Rhodes Memorial Award Fund was established in 2007 in memory of the founder of the School of Visual Arts. This $2,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a third-year BFA Visual and Critical Studies Department student who demonstrates excellence in writing; applicants are reviewed by a panel of alumni and administrators.

Brian Weil Memorial Award Fund


The Brian Weil Memorial Award Fund was established in 2002 by Stephen Frailey, chair of BFA Photography, in memory of his friend Brian Weil. This $1,000 award is given annually to a graduating SVA photography student from the BFA program who shares the integrity and ideology that Brian fought to maintain in the field of photography.

Richard Wilde Award Fund


The Richard Wilde Award Fund was established in 2009 to commemorate Richard Wilde's 40th anniversary at SVA. Wilde is currently chair of BFA Advertising and Graphic Design. Awards from the fund will be given to third-year undergraduate advertising and graphic design majors.
