SVA Alumni Society provides a wide variety of scholarships and awards to students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in all majors offered by the College.

SVA Alumni Society currently administers the Alumni Scholarship Fund, whose programs include Alumni Scholarship Awards, the Housing Scholarship Award, the Merit Award and more than a dozen named award funds.

Alumni Scholarship Award Fund

The Alumni Scholarship Award Fund was established in 1999 by The Alumni Society. Awards are distributed annually to undergraduate and graduate students in their final year at SVA to aid in the completion of final thesis/portfolio projects. These cash awards range from $500 to $2,000, depending on the student's project budget, and are intended to cover project expenses. Applications are ranked by an alumni panel whose recommendations are approved by The Alumni Society Board of Directors. An annual total of $40,000 in scholarships has been awarded each year since 2008. Applications are available each October. 727 Award Fund

The 727 Award Fund was established in 2005 by a group of advertising and graphic design alumni headed by Todd Radom (BFA 1986 Graphic Design), a member of The Alumni Society Board of Directors. This annual award is designated to support a thesis project by an undergraduate design, illustration, cartooning or advertising major. Funding is distributed during the annual Alumni Scholarship Awards program. Applications are ranked by an alumni panel whose recommendations are approved by The Alumni Society Board of Directors. Alumni Society Housing Scholarship Fund

The Alumni Society Housing Scholarship Fund, established in 2006 by The Alumni Society, annually provides one new award to an incoming freshman/non-transfer student with financial need to cover the full cost of housing at SVA (not to exceed four years). The scholarship provides on-campus housing to a student who otherwise would commute from home. The scholarship does not cover the cost of meals, and all applicants must be able to demonstrate the ability to cover the costs of food and out-of-pocket living expenses. Eligible students apply for the award during the annual Housing Award application cycle. A panel of alumni and administrators reviews applications for this award. Alumni Society Merit Award

The Alumni Society Merit Award has been given annually since 2001 to a BFA candidate who has demonstrated community building and leadership excellence during his or her time at SVA. Nominees for this $1,000 award are selected by the Office of Student Affairs. Nominee applications are reviewed by a panel of alumni and administrators.

William C. Arkell Memorial Award Fund

The William C. Arkell Memorial Award Fund was established in 2002 by an anonymous SVA alumnus. This annual $5,000 award is designated to support a thesis project by an undergraduate film and video major working in the narrative film genre. Funding is distributed during the annual Alumni Scholarship Awards program. Applications are ranked by a panel of SVA alumni working in the field of narrative film whose recommendations are approved by The Alumni Society Board of Directors. Ellsworth Ausby Memorial Award Fund

The Ellsworth Ausby Memorial Award Fund was established in 2011 in honor of SVA alumnus and longtime faculty member Ellsworth Ausby (BFA 1975 Fine Arts) as a tribute to his life and work as an instructor and visual artist. This annual award is designated to support a thesis project by an undergraduate or graduate fine arts major.

Robert I. Blumenthal Memorial Award Fund

The Robert I. Blumenthal Memorial Award Fund was established in 2002 by Anthony Porpora (G 1956 Advertising), a close friend of Robert Blumenthal and the personal representative of his estate. This $1,000 annual award is designated to support a thesis project by an undergraduate design major. Funding is distributed during the annual Alumni Scholarship Awards program. Applications are ranked by an alumni panel whose recommendations are approved by The Alumni Society Board of Directors. DaVinci Award

The DaVinci Award Fund, financed by DaVinci Artist Supply (previously the Shakespeare & Co. Award, funded by the Shakespeare & Co. bookstore from 2003 to 2011), annually provides $2,500 to one or more students graduating from the BFA Illustration and Cartooning Department whose thesis project is an illustrated book or graphic novel. The award process is overseen by the BFA Illustration and Cartooning Department.

Will Eisner Sequential Art Award Fund

The Will Eisner Sequential Art Award Fund was established in 2008 by the Will & Ann Eisner Family Foundation in memory of SVA faculty member Will Eisner, whose work was integral to establishing the graphic novel as a form of literature. This annual award is designated to support a thesis project by a final-year undergraduate or graduate student whose work is in sequential art. Funding is distributed during the annual Alumni Scholarship Awards program. Applications are ranked by an alumni panel whose recommendations are approved by The Alumni Society Board of Directors. The Jack Endewelt Memorial Award Fund was established in 2007 in memory of the longtime SVA chair, instructor and alumnus Jack Endewelt (BFA 1984 Illustration). The Amelia Geocos Memorial Award Fund was established in 2008 in memory of Amelia Geocos (2007 BFA Fine Arts) by her parents Marian and Cliff Geocos. Bob Guglielmo Memorial Award Fund

The Bob Guglielmo Memorial Award Fund was established in 2003 in memory of former Office of Alumni Affairs Director and SVA alumnus Bob Guglielmo (BFA 1984 Cartooning). At the request of Bob's family, the fund provides Bob's friends, classmates and colleagues with an opportunity to make donations in his memory. This annual award is designated to support a thesis project by an undergraduate cartooning major. Funding is distributed during the annual Alumni Scholarship Awards program. The James Richard Janowsky Award Fund was established in 2012 by filmmaker and SVA faculty member James Janowsky. This annual award is designated to support a thesis project by an undergraduate film and video student working in the narrative film genre. Lila Eva Lewenthal Memorial Award Fund

The Lila Eva Lewental Memorial Award Fund was established in 2012 in memory of Lila Eva Lewental (BFA 1977 Media Arts) per a bequest received from the Estate of Lila Eva Lewental. Awards are need-based and are distributed annually to a student to pay for student loan debt. Nominees are selected by the Office of Financial Aid and reviewed by the Office of Development and Alumni Affairs to assess individual merit.

The Sylvia Lipson Allen Memorial Award Fund was established in 2006 in memory of Sylvia Lipson Allen, an SVA evening student. This annual $2,000 award is designated to support a thesis project by an undergraduate fine arts major. Funding is distributed during the annual Alumni Scholarship Awards program. Jack Potter Memorial Award Fund

The Jack Potter Memorial Award Fund was established in 2002 to commemorate longtime SVA drawing faculty member Jack Potter, providing Jack's friends and colleagues the opportunity to make donations in his memory. This $2,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a freshman foundation program student with exceptional drawing skills. Nominees are selected by the Office of Admissions and reviewed by a panel of alumni and administrators.

Thomas Reiss Memorial Award Fund

The Thomas Reiss Memorial Award Fund was established in 2003 in memory of Thomas Reiss (MFA 1993 Photography and Related Media) by his brother, Richard M. Reiss. An avid environmentalist, Tom passed away in August 2002 in a boating accident in Thailand. This annual award is designated to support a thesis project by a final-year MFA Photography, Video and Related Media major whose project addresses a humanitarian issue. Funding is distributed during the annual Alumni Scholarship Awards program. Applications are ranked by an alumni panel whose recommendations are approved by The Alumni Society Board of Directors. Silas H. Rhodes Memorial Award Fund

The Silas H. Rhodes Memorial Award Fund was established in 2007 in memory of SVA founder. This $2,000 scholarship is awarded annually to third-year BFA Visual and Critical Studies Department students who demonstrate excellence in writing.  The award process is overseen by the BFA Visual and Critical Studies Department.

The Rodman Family Scholarship Fund

The Rodman Family Scholarship Fund was established in 2012 by Lawrence B. Rodman and Linda F. Rodman, friends of The Alumni Society. This award is designated annually to support an SVA undergraduate or graduate student on financial aid, providing assistance for a thesis project. The selection panel makes an effort to rotate the department from which award recipients are chosen from year to year.

Brian Weil Memorial Award Fund

The Brian Weil Memorial Award Fund was established in 2002 by Stephen Frailey, Chair of the BFA Photography Department in memory of his friend Brian Weil. This $1,000 award is designated annually to recognize an undergraduate photography major who shares the integrity and ideology that Brian fought so vigorously to maintain in the photographic medium. The award process is overseen by the BFA Photography Department.

Richard Wilde Award Fund

The Richard Wilde Award Fund was established in 2009 to commemorate Richard Wilde's 40th anniversary at SVA. Wilde currently is Chair of the BFA Advertising and Design Departments. This $5,000 award is designated annually to recognize a third-year undergraduate advertising or design student. The award process is overseen by the BFA Advertising and Design Departments.

The Edward Zutrau Memorial Award Fund was established in 2007 to honor the memory of an SVA student’s grandfather.
