The Office of Learning Technologies (OLT) has an overarching goal of enhancing student and faculty engagement, learning, and communication at SVA.

Faculty Training & Support

Through training workshops and ongoing support, OLT assists faculty with updating their course curricula, improving their teaching methodologies, and implementing new learning technologies in their classes. When used effectively, such tools help increase student engagement, improve clarity around assignments and course requirements, and ensure timely and effective assessment of students' work.

Online Course Development

OLT works with Academic Affairs, the Division of Continuing Education, and with a wide range of department chairs and faculty to develop and support new online learning opportunities at SVA. The College offers fully online courses through its two graduate low-residency programs, MFA Art Practice and MFA Visual Narrative. Additionally, OLT works with individual instructors to develop new online Continuing Education courses every year. Most recently, OLT partnered with the MOOC platform to develop two online programs. Research & Advocacy

The Office of Learning Technologies is a centralized location for continuous research and vetting of teaching and learning technologies. “Ed tech” is an extremely dynamic industry with new tools rolling out every month. We want to be aware of innovative new tools and practices in higher education while remaining grounded in the needs of the SVA community.

OLT is staffed with individuals who are passionate about SVA and hold backgrounds in program development, instructional design, and video production. Some of the ways we continue our own learning are:

  • Conducting faculty and student surveys to assess changing needs at SVA
  • Researching and reviewing new teaching and learning technologies and piloting with faculty and staff
  • Working closely with Academic Affairs, the SVA Library, IT, and Department Chairs to identify areas of need at SVA and research good solutions to move forward
  • Being available to hear from faculty, help them problem-solve whenever possible, and be prepared to take their concerns to SVA's leadership whenever necessary

Sound & Video Production

Sound Booth

OLT has a professional sound booth for recording lectures, screen recordings, audio recordings, Skype interviews, etc. It is available for use by all SVA faculty. The sound booth is available Monday through Friday between the hours of 10am and 4pm. To reserve time in the sound booth, please fill out the reservation form.

SVA Event Coverage

OLT strives to capture and make available as much rich SVA-related content as possible by documenting public events happening around the campus. Once captured, we edit the videos and distribute them to the event hosting department and upload them to SVA’s YouTube and iTunes U channels. These videos have been viewed hundreds of thousands of times by individuals in over 200 countries. OLT also creates all video content for the College’s low-residency programs (discussed above in “Online Course Development”), as well as training videos for faculty development and support.

Video Studio

OLT has a professional video studio that is available for use by all low residency instructors. Interviews, demonstrations, and other content can be recorded in the studio. Studio time is limited so please contact us about booking your event at least two weeks prior to your desired shoot date. To book the video studio, please call 212-592-2729.
