MAT Art Education at SVA provides a hands-on learning environment where student teachers research and explore educational issues and topics while continuing to make art. Course work relates directly to fieldwork and student teaching through discussion of course development, classroom management, and age-appropriate application of educational theory.
The 36-credit degree can be completed in either a full-time, one-year program or part-time, two-year program. All students teach at diverse New York City public school sites and community-based children’s programs at SVA. In the final semester, each student is required to complete a thesis project exploring a topic of personal importance through literature review and experience in the classroom.
SVA MAT in Art Education is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation, formerly known as the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, and by New York State Regents Accreditation of Teacher Education. The program provides the coursework and student teaching required for the New York State Initial Certification in Art, pre-K through grade 12.
