WHEN WE WELCOME NEW FRESHMEN to School of Visual Arts at the beginning of each academic year, we give them not one but two resources for choosing their classes: the Registration Book and the Faculty Bio Book. The importance of the former is obvious to the students, but it is often the latter that will end up playing a more significant role during their time here at the College. Our facultymade up of more than 800 professionals from every corner of the creative fieldsis a collection of talented and generous people who serve simultaneously as educators and role models to the students who study with them. Because our faculty members maintain active careers that shape their role as teachers, they are able to consistently bring the professional realities of the outside world into the classroom.
The faculty is the theme of this year’s Annual, not just because of who they are, but because in many ways they are the story of the College in any given year. Across the numerous studio and academic programs at SVA, the members of each department’s faculty embody and carry out the College’s stated mission on a daily basis: to educate students who aspire to become professional artists. By sharing with our students the skills and experience they use in the professional world, the next generation of painters, sculptors, photographers, designers, illustrators, animators, filmmakers, art educators, art therapists and creative minds is being formed in an environment of artistic vision and success. Our students learn more than just the technical skills of their chosen disciplinethey learn what it means, and what it takes, to succeed both as artists and as thoughtful members of society.
While the theme of this year’s Annual is the faculty, it is also about a year of events and highlights outside the classroom. From the College’s expanded relationship with the Museum of Modern Art’s Department of Education and the Office of Career Development’s Industry Fair, to the national spotlight on alumnus Deborah Adler’s redesigned prescription pill bottle, the 200506 academic year saw the College’s students, faculty, staff and alumni continuing to engage each other and the world at large with the energy and creativity that is synonymous with SVA. ” |
